Russian Academy of Sciences

Society founded in 1725 by Catherine the Great in St Petersburg. The academy has been responsible for such achievements as the Sputnik satellite, and has daughter academies in the Ukraine (welding, cybernetics), Armenia (astrophysics), and Georgia (mechanical engineering).
