Russo, William (1928– )

US composer. After study in Chicago, he worked with the Stan Kenton Orchestra 1950–54, as a trombonist and composer-arranger. He directed his own orchestra in New York 1958–61 and the London Jazz Orchestra 1962–65.

Works

Opera

Land of Milk and Honey and Antigone (both Chicago, 1967), A Cabaret Opera (New York 1970), Aesop's Fables (1971), The Shepherds' Christmas (1979), Isabella's Fortune, The Pay-Off (1984) and Talking to the Sun (Chicago 1989).

Ballet

The World of Alcina (1954) and The Golden Bird (1984).

Other

two symphonies (1957–58); music for jazz bands, and rock cantatas; sonata for violin and piano (1986).
