Rustavi| City in southeastern Georgia, 25 km/16 mi southeast of Tbilisi on the Kura River; population (2001 est) 178,500. Rustavi is a centre of the iron and steel industry in Transcaucasia, and also produces chamicals (principally nitrate fertilizers and synthetic fibres). |
| Rustavi was founded in 1948 to house the workforce that was building, and later running, the metallurgical plant, constructed in 1941–50. |
| Near the town lie the ruins of the ancient settlement of the same name, destroyed at the beginning of the 15th century by the Mongols. |
