Rustavi

City in southeastern Georgia, 25 km/16 mi southeast of Tbilisi on the Kura River; population (2001 est) 178,500. Rustavi is a centre of the iron and steel industry in Transcaucasia, and also produces chamicals (principally nitrate fertilizers and synthetic fibres).

Rustavi was founded in 1948 to house the workforce that was building, and later running, the metallurgical plant, constructed in 1941–50.

Near the town lie the ruins of the ancient settlement of the same name, destroyed at the beginning of the 15th century by the Mongols.
