Rustenburg

Town in North West province, South Africa, 100 km/62 mi west of Pretoria; population (district, 1991) 125,300. The town is located in an important citrus- and tobacco-growing area. This is also one of the principal districts for raising beef cattle. Platinum is mined within 14 km/9 mi of the town. Chromium, asbestos, tin, and lead are also mined. The town is a popular holiday resort.
