Rusyn

A Slavonic people of the Transcarpathian region of central Europe, numbering about 1.2 million (1993). Most Rusyn live in Ukraine; others live in Poland, Romania, Slovakia, Hungary, Serbia (Vojvodina), and Croatia. There has never been an independent Rusyn state, but there is a Rusyn separatist movement in Ukraine (from 1990). An attempt is also being made by nationalists to codify a literary Rusyn language. Their religion is Uniate.

In a referendum in Ukraine 1991, 78% of Rusyns voted for self-rule.
