Rutter, John

Rutter, John (1945– )

English composer and choral director. He has written carols, anthems, and other choral music (mostly sacred), popular with church choirs. He edited and recorded the original version of Fauré's Requiem in 1984 and composed his own Requiem the following year.

He studied at Cambridge and founded the Cambridge Singers in 1981; they made their US debut in 1990.

Jeffrey Skidmore will direct a choir of more than 30 singers on Wednesday with music ranging from traditional carols to a Bach chorale and works by living composers including John Rutter, John Joubert, the Birmingham-based composer celebrating his 80th birthday this year, and Leamington-based Howard Skempton, who is celebrating his 60th birthday this year.
Longwood host Garswood Hall tonight, whose team includes star men Alan Broadhurst, Peter Consterdine, Ian Rutter, John Taylor and Kevin Shaw.
