Ruy Blas

Opera by William Howard Glover (1819–1875) (libretto by composer, based on Victor Hugo's drama), produced at the Covent Garden Theatre, London, on 24 October 1861. In the story, Don Sallustio, seeking revenge against the Queen of Spain, sends his servant Ruy Blas to her court disguised as a nobleman. He rises through the ranks and is exposed later by the Don as a plebeian, thus dishonouring the Queen. But Ruy Blas earns his honour by killing the vengeful villain and drinking poison.

Opera by Marchetti (libretto in Italian, by Carlo d'Ormeville, based on Hugo), produced at La Scala, Milan, on 3 April 1869.

Overture and chorus for Hugo's drama by Mendelssohn, Op. 95 and Op. 77 no. 3, composed for a production at Leipzig on 9 March 1839.
