Ruysbroeck, Willem van

    0.01 sec.

Ruysbroeck, Willem van (c. 1220-c. 1294)

Flemish friar, traveller, and missionary, probably born near St Omer. He entered the Franciscan order, and was sent to Palestine on a mission. In 1253 King Louis IX of France sent Ruysbroeck and two other friars on an embassy to the Mongolian prince Sartak and to the Mongolian emperor Mangu Khan. The return journey was made by way of Caucasia and Syria to Tripoli in North Africa, where he arrived in 1255. Ruysbroeck wrote an account of his travels in Latin.
