São Carlos

Cathedral town in the southern state of São Paulo, Brazil, 210 km/130 mi northwest of the city of São Paulo.; population (1996) 175,517. A rail junction on the Monjolinho River, São Carlos conducts a considerable trade in regional products such as coffee, cotton, cattle, sugar, and tobacco. Industrial enterprises here include distilleries, breweries, textile mills, and some light engineering factories.
