São Francisco do Sul

Port in the state of Santa Catarina, Brazil, 150 km/93 mi north of Florianópolis; population (1996) 27,787. It is an important railway centre and serves as the port for Joinvile, 45 km/28 mi inland. São Francisco do Sul trades in yerba maté (‘Paraguay tea’), rice, manioc, and timber. There is an oil refinery here, which has led to some pollution.
