São Luís (de Maranhão)

Capital of the state of Maranhão, in northeast Brazil; population (2000) 837,600. It is also a port of regional importance, but does virtually no international trade. Products derived from the babaçu palms (for which the surrounding state is famous), such as nuts, kernels, and oil, are São Luís's main exports. Cotton, sugar, fibres, and hides are also traded from here.

The town was founded in 1612 and named in honour of St Louis of France. It was once a centre of the Brazilian slave trade; many of the population are of African origin. The original dense forests surrounding the area have been cut down, but are being replaced with babaĉu palms.
