Sæverud, Harald (1897-1992)

Norwegian composer and conductor. He studied first at Bergen and then studied conducting under Clemens Krauss at Berlin. He returned to Bergen as a conductor and received a state pension for composition in 1933.

Works

Orchestral

Minnesota Symphony; nine symphonies (1916-66); concertos for oboe, cello, violin, and piano; incidental music for Shakespeare's ‘Rape of Lucretia’ (1935) and Ibsen's Peer Gynt;

Chamber

50 variations for chamber orchestra; three string quartets (1969, 1975, 1979); piano pieces.
