Sénéchal, Michel (1927– )

French tenor. He studied at the Paris Conservatory, and in 1952 he won the Geneva International Competition. He sang at Salzburg in 1953, and in 1956 he was heard as Rameau's Platée, at Aix. In 1966 he sang Ravel's Gonzalve at Glyndebourne. He was much admired in Europe in operas by Britten, Massenet, and Mozart. From 1980 he directed the opera school at the Paris Opéra. He made his New York debut at the Metropolitan Opera House in 1982, in Les Contes d'Hoffmann. In 1985 he appeared with the Paris Opéra, as Pope Leo X in the premiere of Boehmer's Docteur Faustus.
