Söderman, (Johan) August (1832–1876)

Swedish composer. He learnt music from his father, a theatre conductor, and at 18 went to Finland as director of music to a Swedish company of musicians. In 1856 he produced his first operetta at Helsinki. After a period of study at Leipzig he was appointed chorus master at the Royal Opera at Stockholm in 1860 and second conductor in 1862.

Opera and stage

the operetta The Devil's First Lesson (1856) and others; incidental music to Schiller's Maid of Orleans, Topelius's Regina and other plays.

Choral and voice

Mass for solo voices, chorus and orchestra; Swedish Wedding for female voices, cantatas, and part-songs; vocal settings of Bellman's rhapsodies; sacred songs and hymns with organ; ballads and songs for voice and piano.

Orchestral

Circassian Dance, concert overture for orchestra.
