Safi| Atlantic port in Tensift province, northwest Morocco, 200 km/124 mi southwest of Casablanca; population (2004) 284,800. It exports phosphates and has fertilizer plants, sardine factories, and boat-building yards. It is connected by rail to the phosphate deposits at Khouribga. Products include pottery, cereals, and olives; sheep, goats, and cattle are raised. |
| Safi was originally settled by the Canaanites, and inhabited by the Carthaginians, Romans, Jews, Goths, and, from the 11th century, by Muslims. Safi was fortified and held by the Portuguese until 1641. It was one of the ports used by US forces in 1942, and became an important base. |
