shoes![]() Decoratively painted Dutch wooden clogs, hung out for the tourists in Delft, Holland. The original clog, dating from medieval times, comprised a wooden sole to which an ‘upper’ of leather or other material was attached by tacks or nails. It was the equivalent of a rustic boot – working footwear for use in deep mud or on sharp pebbles.
