sun protection factor

In medicine, the multiples of protection provided by sunscreens against burning compared with the unprotected skin.

Sunscreens are used to protect the skin from the harmful effects of excessive exposure to ultraviolet radiation. They should be applied regularly and most do not offer complete protection. Proprietary sunscreens are graded according to the degree of protection provided against medium wavelengths of ultraviolet radiation (UVB). Sunscreens do not prevent the long-term damage due to long wavelengths of ultraviolet radiation (UVA).
