A view of the Spree River flowing through former East Berlin. The Spree connects the inland harbour in the city via a series of waterways with the Baltic Sea.

River in eastern Germany; length 365 km/226 mi. The Spree rises on the borders of Bohemia and the Land (administrative region) of Saxony, and after flowing generally north and northwest joins the River Havel to the west of Berlin, at Spandau. On its course, the Spree passes through Bautzen, Cottbus, and Berlin. A marshy area in its valley near Cottbus is called the Spreewald.
