sundial

Instrument measuring time by means of a shadow cast by the Sun. Almost completely superseded by the proliferation of clocks, it survives ornamentally in gardens and public spaces. The dial is marked with the hours at graduated distances, and a style or gnomon (parallel to Earth's axis and pointing north-south) casts the shadow.
