    0.01 sec.

Saadawi, Nawal al- (1931– )

Egyptian novelist and feminist. Her main contention is that the manipulation of Islam by Arab governments contributes to the oppression of women. Because of her opinions she was jailed during the presidency of Anwar Sadat, and after self-exile to the USA she returned to Egypt.

She has to her credit many books dealing with the condition of women in Arab societies. A strong advocate of women's rights, Saadawi has denounced the concept of ‘family honour’ and its corollary notion of virginity.
