Saalfeld

Town in the Land (administrative region) of Thuringia, Germany, on the River Saale, 58 km/36 mi southwest of Gera; population (1996) 32,700. The district has iron-ore mines (silver was mined here in the 16th century), and there are machine-tool, textile, and electrical industries.

Saalfeld was the capital of the Duchy of Saxe-Saalfeld 1680-1735. The town has a 13th-century friary (now a museum), a 14th-century church, and a 16th-century town hall.
