Saarinen, Eero

Saarinen, Eero (1910-1961)

Finnish-born US architect. He was renowned for his wide range of innovative modernist designs, experimenting with different structures and shapes. His works include the US embassy, London (1955-61); the TWA terminal at John F Kennedy Airport, New York City (1956-62); and Dulles Airport, Washington, DC (1958-63). He collaborated on a number of projects with his father, Eliel Saarinen.

He was born at Kirkkonummi, Finland, and went to the USA in 1923 with his father. He worked for some years with his father before executing his first major work, the General Motors Technical Center in Warren, Michigan (1948-55), and then developed a personal style with characteristic sweeping curves, as in the Yale Hockey Rink (1958), and Kresge Auditorium, Massachusetts Institute of Technology. He also designed furniture.
