Saavedra Lamas, Carlos (1878-1959)

Argentine lawyer, professor, and diplomat. He served as minister of foreign affairs 1932-38 and president of the assembly of the League of Nations in 1936. He was instrumental in drafting an antiwar agreement in 1932, which was subsequently adopted by many South American republics 1933-34. Saavedra was awarded the Nobel Prize for Peace in 1936 for his success, in association with Argentine president Agustín Pedro Justo, in bringing to an end the Chaco war in 1935.

He was born in Buenos Aires and graduated from the University of Buenos Aires in 1903. He stayed there to teach political economy and constitutional law.
