Sabha

Town in central Libya, 640 km/400 mi south of Tripoli; population (1998 est) 54,000. Sabha is the site of an oil refinery designed to process 20,000 barrels of crude oil per day. Industries include date-packing and handicrafts, and iron ore is mined locally.

The town lies in an oasis in the Sahara on ancient caravan routes and still serves motor caravans from Tunisia and Chad. It has a national museum.

The Bill that was introduced in the Rajya Sabha by the previous Government was referred to the Standing Committee.
