Sacco, Nicola

Also found in: Encyclopedia 0.02 sec.

Sacco, (Ferdinando) Nicola (1891–1927)

Italian anarchist. Sacco emigrated to the USA in 1908. In 1920 he was accused, with Bartolomeo Vanzetti, of murdering two men while robbing a shoe factory in Massachusetts. Although the evidence was largely circumstantial, the two men were tried in 1921 and sentenced to death. They were executed in 1927 after a controversial and lengthy appeal. It has been claimed that they were punished for their socialist sympathies, but experts now believe that Sacco was guilty, and Vanzetti innocent.
