Vestal Virgin

One of the six priestesses of the Roman goddess Vesta, who served in her temple in Rome. Their lives were dedicated to the goddess and they kept the sacred flame burning permanently in the shrine.

The penalty for breaking the vow of chastity was death, and they were punished if they allowed the sacred flame to go out.

They were chosen by lot from 20 virgins of free and worthy parentage, and officiated for at least 30 years: 10 years of learning and initiation, 10 of serving, and 10 teaching the newly converted.
