Saco

City in southwestern Maine, on the Saco River across from Biddeford, 24 km/15 mi south of Portland; population (1990) 15,200. Saco and Biddeford were founded as one town in 1630, and separated in 1762.

Products have included textiles, clothing, shoes, firearms, and rawhide products. The city was home to iron foundries in the 19th century, and cotton mills until their closure in 1958.
