Sacramento

River in northern California, USA; length 615 km/382 mi. It rises close to Mount Shasta in the Cascade range, and flows southeast to Sacramento, through the western part of the Sierra Nevada, and eventually into San Francisco Bay. The Shasta Dam on the upper Sacramento and the Keswick Dam provide flood control, power, and irrigation; the irrigated agricultural land is very productive. The river is navigable 412 km/256 mi to Red Bluff.
