Sacred Thread ceremony

Hindu initiation ceremony that marks the passage to maturity for boys of the upper three castes; it usually takes place between the ages of five and twelve. It is regarded as a second birth, and the castes whose males are entitled to undergo the ceremony are called ‘twice born’.
