Holy Roman Empire![]() Charlemagne, in ceremonial robes and crown, surrounded by the symbols of his power. To his right is the French royal coat of arms, and to his left is the arms of the Holy Roman Empire. Charlemagne is holding the imperial orb (a globe bearing the Christian cross) and in the other hand a sword. The sword used to crown kings of France, though made in the 12th century, is known as the Charlemagne sword in honour of this great historic figure. Empire of Charlemagne and his successors, and the German Empire 962-1806, both being regarded as the Christian (hence ‘holy’) revival of the Roman Empire.
