English National Opera

Opera company based at the London Coliseum. Founded in 1931 as the Vic-Wells Opera Company, it became the English National Opera in 1974. It always performs in English.

English theatre and ballet producer Lilian Baylis formed a small theatre company, the predecessor to the ENO, in 1912 at the Old Vic. It performed at both the Old Vic, and from 1931, Sadler's Wells theatre. It moved from Sadler's Wells to the Coliseum in 1968.

The company performs a range of operas and is particularly known for its modern interpretations of classic pieces. Examples include Wagner's Ring Cycle, performed in the 1970s and 2000s, and several Gilbert and Sullivan operas such as The Mikado.
