Safety Harbor

Safety Harbor

City in west-central Florida, 24 km/15 mi west of Tampa and 24 km/15 mi north of St Petersburg, at the head of Old Tampa Bay; population (1990) 15,100. It takes its name from early mariners' use of its inlet as a haven from hurricanes. It is a resort and residential community.

It was settled as a plantation in the 1820s and later became a health resort noted for its mineral springs.
