Safford

City and administrative headquarters of Graham County, southeastern Arizona, on the Gila River, 137 km/85 mi northeast of Tucson; population (1990) 7,400. It is the trade centre of an agricultural valley producing cotton, grain, and livestock, and serves as a gateway to the Coronado National Forest, to the southwest, and to an area of hot mineral baths to its south.

It was founded by farmers in 1874. There is a federal prison camp to the south.
