Safid Rud

River in northwest Iran; length 750 km/465 mi. It rises near Sanandaj (where it is known as the Qezel Uzon), flows north through Azerbaijan province, then southeast, and finally northeast through Gilan province into the Caspian Sea, east of Rasht. The river is dammed at Manjil, and is an important source of irrigation water and hydroelectric power.
