Sag Harbor

Community in East Hampton town, southeastern New York State, on Long Island's South Fork facing Gardiners Bay, 40 km/25 mi west of Montauk Point; population (1990) 2,100. It is a popular summer resort.

In the mid-19th century it was a major whaling port, and many whalers' homes survive. The Long Island Herald, the island's first local newspaper, was founded here in 1791.
