Sagaing

Capital and river port of Sagaing division, Myanmar, situated opposite Ava on the Irrawaddy River, 16 km/10 mi southwest of Mandalay; population (1998 est) 61,100. Rice, cotton, and sesame are produced in the surrounding area, enabled by irrigation.

Sagaing was a capital of the Shan kingdom around 1322 and of the Konbaung dynasty from 1760 to 1764, and has many temples, pagodas, and other historic buildings, including the Kaunghmudaw pagoda, built in 1636.

The 1,220 m/4,003 ft Ava Bridge at Sagaing was, until 1997, the only bridge across the Irrawaddy; built by the British in 1934, it was blown up by the retreating Allies during World War II, and reopened in 1954.
