Sudd

Swampy lowland region, straddling Unity (Wehida) and Jonglei states in central Sudan, through which flow the White Nile and Bahr-al-Ghazal; area 128,000 sq km/49,421 sq mi. The flow is impeded by papyrus and aquatic grass, known in Arabic as sudd, and as much as half the rivers' combined volume is lost through evaporation and seepage.
