Saharanpur

Town of Uttar Pradesh state, northern India, 152 km/95 mi northeast of Delhi; population (1991) 374,000. It is on a railway junction, and is a centre for agricultural processing. Fruit-growing, especially mangoes, and furniture manufacture are also important.

Founded in 1340, the town was named after the Muslim saint Shah Haran Christi. During British rule, it became an important military base, particularly during the Gurkha War.
