Said, Edward W (1935-2003)

Palestinian-born author, educator, and political activist. Said, who was educated in the USA. became a refugee during the 1947 partition of Palestine. He was a literary scholar and champion of Palestinian rights, and his books include Orientalism (1978), Covering Islam (1981), and Culture and Imperialism (1993). He wrote much about the way in which the Middle East is perceived in the West, and was a recognized leader of the Palestinian cause.
