Saint-Hyacinthe

City in southern Québec, Canada, 50 km/31 mi east of Montréal, on the River Yamaska; population (1991) 39,300. With rail and road connections, it is the service, commercial, and cultural centre for an agricultural area, and manufactures a variety of products including machinery, textiles, and paper and food products.

Its institutions include the Séminaire de Saint-Hyacinthe (1811), L'Ecole Médicine Vétérinaire (1866), and the Collège Saint-Maurice (1935).
