Saint-Jean-sur-Richelieu

Saint-Jean-sur-Richelieu

City in southern Québec, Canada, 34 km/21 mi southeast of Montréal, on the Richelieu River opposite Iberville; population (1991) 37,600. It is a trade centre with diversified manufacturing, and has a military college.

The city was built on the site of Fort-Saint-Jean (1666); in 1836, the first railway built in Canada linked it with La Prairie.
