Saint-Louis

Town in Senegal, on an island at the mouth of the River Senegal; population (2001 est) 144,100. Founded in 1659, it was the first French settlement on the mainland of West Africa, and was the capital of Senegal until 1958, when the seat of government was transferred to Dakar. Saint-Louis is a commercial centre, and has an important fishing industry.
