Sainte-Foy

City in southern Québec, Canada, 6 km/4 mi southwest of central Québec City, of which it is the chief residential suburb; population (1991) 71,100. It houses government-related agencies and is home to L'Université Laval, the first (1852) francophone Roman Catholic university on the North American continent.

The village of Sainte-Foy was the site of a battle in 1760 in which the French under François de Lévis defeated a British force based in Québec City; on arrival of British reinforcements, however, they were forced to retreat to Montréal.
