Sainton, Prosper

Sainton, Prosper (Philippe Cathérine) (1813–1890)

French violinist and composer. He played at the Société des Concerts and the Opéra in Paris, then travelled widely in Europe and in 1840 became professor at the Toulouse Conservatory. He was the husband of the singer Charlotte Sainton-Dolby.

He studied violin under François Habeneck at the Paris Conservatory. In 1844 he visited London and played under Mendelssohn, returning in 1845 to settle down as a member of the Beethoven Quartet Society, orchestra leader, and teacher.
