The deep-blue African violet Saintpaulia ionatha is a popular houseplant. It is named after Baron Walter von Saint Paul St Claire, who discovered it in the Usambara Mountains in South Africa in the late 19th century. It is unrelated to the common violet.

Herbaceous plant from tropical central and East Africa, with velvety green leaves and scentless purple flowers. Different colours and double-flowered varieties have been bred. (Saintpaulia ionantha, family Gesneriaceae.)
