Saintsbury, George Edward Bateman

Saintsbury, George Edward Bateman (1845-1933)

English critic and literary historian. He wrote on the history of French and English literature, on the novelists Walter Scott and William Thackeray, and histories of criticism, the English novel, prosody, and prose rhythms. He became widely known for his book on wine, Notes on a Cellar-Book 1920.

Saintsbury was born in Southampton and studied at Oxford. After holding various academic appointments, he became professor of rhetoric and English literature at Edinburgh University 1895-1915. He also edited the works of the novelists Honoré de Balzac, Henry Fielding, and Thackeray, and wrote on the minor poets of the reigns of Charles I and II.
