Saionji, Kinmochi (1849-1940)

Japanese prince and politician, prime minister 1906-08 and 1911-12. He was one of the group of elder statesmen known as Genro. By surviving all the other Genro, Saionji exerted considerable influence behind the scenes at times of political uncertainty in the 1920s and 1930s.

Born into an aristocratic family, he was adopted by the Saionji family. He took part in the Meiji restoration of 1868 and studied in France during much of the 1870s.
