Sakkara) The Step Pyramid at Sakkara, Egypt, is over 60 m/197 ft high. Built around 2737-2717 BC from blocks of stone, this was the first pyramid ever constructed, and at the time was the largest monumental stone structure in the world. Village in Egypt, 16 km/10 mi south of Cairo, with 20 pyramids. The oldest of these (third dynasty) is the ‘Step Pyramid’ designed by Imhotep, whose own tomb here was the nucleus of the Aesklepieion, a centre of healing in the ancient world. |
