Sala, George Augustus Henry

Sala, George Augustus Henry (1828-1895)

British journalist. He was a contributor to Household Words and the Illustrated London News. He joined the staff of the Daily Telegraph in 1857, representing the paper in the USA during the Civil War in 1863, and in France during the Franco-Prussian War of 1870-71. He founded Temple Bar in 1860, and was its editor for the first six years.

Sala was born in London, England. He was educated in Paris. Sala wrote books and essays on a wide variety of subjects, including many on travel, although his most valuable work is his 1866 study of William Hogarth. His own Life and Adventures appeared in 1895. He was a leading campaigner against the spread of ‘journalese’ and published annually his own list of clichés.
