Sala Consilina

Town in Campania region, southern Italy, above the River Tanagro, 78 km/48 mi east of Salerno; population (1991) 12,800. It is in the centre of the Vallo di Diano, a high (450 m/1,476 ft) marshy basin in the Apennines, which has been drained and now produces tobacco, cereals, and wine. Nearby is the vast baroque Certosa di San Lorenzo.
